EA's PSP/PS2 exclusive Burnout Dominator is finally available at a Greatest Hits price of only $20. The racer received some critical praise, in spite of a few missing features. The PSP version is definitely the version to get: not only is it $10 cheaper than its console counterpart, it includes more options, such as downloadable tracks.

[Via CAG]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Burnout Dominator advertisement causes controversy

Are people becoming increasingly fearful of the media? It appears so, as an advertisement for Burnout Dominator was deemed too "violent" for the common public to view. In EA's ad for its PS2/PSP racer, an image of a burning car can be seen, with a tag line: "Inner peace through outer violence."

The Advertising Standards Authority commented that "we considered that the images of a car that seemed to have crashed at high speed and a burning tyre, together with a reference to violence, could be seen to condone a violent lifestyle, anti-social behaviour or dangerous driving. We concluded that the ad was irresponsible."

Excuse me? There are far more grotesque and irresponsible advertisements in the media -- why focus on this one? While we understand the effects of advertising are intended to be influential, we highly doubt people will start driving like a Burnout maniac in real life due to this image.

[Via Next-Gen]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Red Gate track now available for Burnout Dominator

Yet another free downloadable track hits Burnout Dominator today. Weeks after the release of "Carnival City," "Red Gate" allows you to boost through the chaotic streets of a Eastern European city at night. The track can be downloaded through the in-game menu, YourPSP, or through EA's official website. If you have wireless internet, we recommend that you do the in-game option: it's much easier. If you don't have wireless internet, download the file from us, and extract the folder into the PSP/SAVEDATA folder on your system.

Kudos to EA for continuing to deliver great, free downloadable content. Let's see other games do the same in the future.

%Gallery-3429%

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Burnout Dominator downloadable content goes live

Burnout Dominator, EA's latest entry to the famed racing series, is getting a little bit bigger on PSP. New downloadable content is available for the game, available via in-game wi-fi (see video, above). For those without wireless internet, a quick visit to EA's official site will give you access to a brand new track, "Carnival City." It certainly looks great, and the price makes it all the more worthwhille.

But, we were worried: maybe the game looks too much like the previous Burnout games? Surely, explosive car gameplay can't get old ... or can it? Let's see what the critics had to say:

IGN (85/100) thinks it ups the ante from previous Burnout titles ... almost: "The racing is just as adrenaline pumping as it's ever been, and possibly even more so than what we saw in Burnout Revenge as you need to be afraid of traffic once again. However, the lack of standard features and modes like Crash are a rather big disappointment."

Gamespot (82/100) doesn't think Dominator revolutionizes the series, but thinks it's still good: "Burnout Dominator is more Burnout, and that's great. It may not have all the newfangled bells and whistles that you'd want from a sequel, but if you're a fan of the series who absolutely must have new tracks as soon as possible, Dominator should satisfy you nicely."

GameSpy (60/100) thinks it's a clear step backwards for the franchise: "Rather than another true entry in the series, Dominator is a simple C-grade mashup."

You've seen the footage, so you should be able to decide for yourself: does this throwback to the earlier Burnout games do it for you? At least one thing's agreed upon by all three of these critics: get the PSP version instead of the PS2. It looks more impressive, and has slightly more functionality than the console counterpart.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Top 5 on PSP: Racing

Filed under: Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, Burnout, Metareview, Fan Stuff

There are plenty of new PSPs in gamer's houses since the holidays and I figured some new PSP owners may not be up to speed on what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Day 2 kicks off with a very competitive genre on PSP: Racing.

Top 5 Racing games on PSP

(tie) Ridge Racer/WipEout Pure

Burnout Legends

TOCA Race Driver 2

Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

Twisted Metal: Head-On

I'm not a giant racing fan, so I only own Burnout Legends and Twisted Metal: Head-On (I dig the carnage factor). I did enjoy them both quite a bit though. But what I think doesn't really matter. What do you think about these 5 games? What racing games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

If you missed it, you can check out our previous top 5 game lists:

Is "Maniac Mode" what the Burnout series needs to feel fresh again? It certainly looks challenging, as evidenced by the trailer above. You'll have to perform burnouts in a continuous chain, creating the franchise's "most challenging" mode yet. It might not be revolutionary, but with pretty graphics, does it really matter? Dominator's release is only a few weeks away now, so Burnout fans should get ready.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Avril Lavigne premieres new song in Burnout Dominator

Burnout Dominator is getting something new. And no, it's not Infrastructure support. It's something just as good, we swear! "Girlfriend", Avril Lavigne's latest single will be debuting in EA's latest racer. Some of the artists included in the game's somewhat eclectic soundtrack include: B'z, Filter, Jane's Addiction, Killswitch, N.E.R.D., Sugarcult and Wired All Wrong. "The Burnout series is an amazing, proven platform for launching the world's biggest songs and artists, and we're thrilled to be working with Avril Lavigne this year to help debut her new song "Girlfriend," said Steve Schnur, EA's Worldwide Executive of Music. "From pop to rock to metal Burnout Dominator is all about attitude and rebellion, which makes it a perfect fit for the 33 artists."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

IGN prefers the PSP Burnout

IGN has recently received a playable build of the PSP version of Burnout Dominator, and they've come with some pretty solid impressions: "Though you may have already checked out the screenshots for the game running on the PSP, you need to see it in action to know how good it looks. While the general detail has been knocked down a notch to run on Sony's portable, when everything is blazing at 150mph+ the two editions look very, very similar."

Thankfully, EA hasn't given PSP owners a watered down version in any way. In fact, IGN surprisingly states that the controls are even better on the PSP: "One thing that we noticed in the hour that we spent with the game this morning is that it's actually a little easier on the hands to play than the PlayStation 2 SKU."

That certainly does sound impressive!
Explosions. Cars. Crashes. The Burnout series certainly knows what gamers want, and although the series is entering its umpteenth iteration, I can't help but be excited for the PS2 and PSP-exclusive Burnout Dominator. The game looks to be the most challenging so far, with the new Maniac mode. Nick Channon from EA explains the new feature: "Maniac mode is all about pushing your dangerous driving skills to the limit. The user earns points for driving into oncoming traffic, doing drifts, near misses etc, and the goal is to score as many points as you can, and thus drive as dangerously as you can. The big kicker in the mode is Burnouts - by chaining Burnouts you earn score multipliers which in turn give you massive scores, which you will need in the later levels of the game."

Check out the full interview at IGN. If you read through all the hype, you'll see that the PSP version will feature exclusive downloadable levels. We're assuming that, unlike EA's cheat codes, they'll be free.

It appears that the PSP is the target platform of choice for the game, as Channon reveals the extra effort placed into the handheld outing: "We really believe that we will deliver an intense, next-gen style experience, especially on the PSP ... We've also spent a lot of time working on the handling in the PSP version. Nick Channon from Criterion Games spoke to Gamespot in a recent interview, and shared a few more details about the upcoming racer:

The game will feature shorter "skill-based" levels, which is "perfect on PSP."

The PSP and PS2 versions will not feature any connectivity with each other.

All multiplayer will be available via ad-hoc (no Infrastructure? Boo!).

Not too revealing, but at least it's something. Expect more updates as this game gets closer.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New Burnout is a PS2 and PSP exclusive

When Burnout 5 was announced for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, current-gen system owners felt somewhat neglected. Well, it appears that Electronic Arts is giving the Sony current-gen platforms some love through an all new Burnout game called Burnout Dominator. "The series was born on the PlayStation 2, and Burnout Dominator is about celebrating the essence of Burnout," said Nick Channon, Senior Producer of Burnout Dominator.

"Celebrating the essence" of the franchise makes this upcoming game sound a lot like PSP's Burnout Legends, which was an amalgamation of various games from the acclaimed series. Considering how excellent Legends was, PSP gamers have a lot to look forward to.

(Of course, a DS version wasn't announced. Probably because the first DS Burnout was a horrible idea.)

[Via Gamasutra]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

More must-have games for PSP

Filed under: Lumines, Burnout, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, Kingdom of Paradise, SOCOM, SSX, Tokobot, Virtua Tennis, X-Men
In some more list-it fashion, CNET hascompiled an index of the top must-have titles for the PSP. However if you're a veteran, chances areyou already have these games.

At any rate, the list still provides a solid vantage point to see what's hoton the portable system.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

1UP nominates PSP titles galore for 2005 awards

Filed under: News, Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Burnout, Grand Theft Auto, Infected, PoPoLoCrois, SOCOM
We don't know what their criteria was, but we'restill mighty happy to note that several PSP games have been nominated for 1UP's yearly Best Of awards, which is greatespecially when made in comparison to the so-far smallish list of must-have games for the system. The nominees are asfollows:

Best Role-Playing Game: PoPoLoCrois
Best Sports/Extreme SportsGame: Virtua Tennis: World Tour
Best Racing Game: Burnout Legends, Ridge Racer, WipeoutPure
Best Adventure Game: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Best PuzzleGame: Lumines
Best Online/Multiplayer Game: SOCOM US Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo
Most Innovative Game: Infected
Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto: LibertyCity Stories

Annoyingly (but perhaps appropriately), four of the five nominees for Best Puzzle of 2005 areon the Nintendo DS. Ports, for instance, was something I eschewed because I felt it used resources that could have been directed towards making more original titles. However, some readers made a few comments that I consider to be, to say the least, very reasonable.

First, the ports that have come out for PSP haven't been all bad; in fact some, like SOCOM and Burnout Legends, have been exceedingly excellent. Second, ports are exactly that: portable versions of the same game that you can play anywhere, and there's nothing wrong with having that. In light of these observations, it's obvious that ported games do have a place in the PSP's repertoire.

An article by USA Today supports the notion that the PSP version of games can match up with their home console counterparts. But on the flip side, the report also dredges up a few weaknesses and briefly cites the PSPs lack of buttons and less-than-impressive AI as the system's more glaring shortcomings. With that said, given the portable's ample but less powerful hardware, are PSP ports really dumber than their original home console version?

Continue reading Do PSP games have dumber AI?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
