PS Fanboy Best of 2008 Awards

PSP may not have had a lot of games this year, but it certainly had a lot of great games. But only ONE can be PSP Game of the Year. What is it? Well, find out here.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from the PS Fanboy staff!

Castlevania Chronicles will appear on the PS Store today

As the ESRB predicted, Castlevania Chronicles will make its debut on the US PSN later today. Wired got word that the PlayStation uno remake of the 1993 Sharp X68000 title will come in the form of a PS Store download. The remake features improved graphics, remixed music, level redesigns as well as a rendered introduction and ending. At one point, this rare game would have fetched a rather fabulous price on eBay, but now gamers won't have to pay big bucks to join in on the Dracula hunting fun -- instead, the price of admission will be a recession-friendly $5.99.

Way better than Castlevania Judgement, we'll give you that.

Downgraded investment rating causes Sony stock fall

Sony stock fell 5.9 percent in Japan today as two analysts downgraded their investment rating of the company, "citing a loss of competitiveness." Credit Suisse reduced its rating of Sony from "neutral" to "underperform," believing "fundamental changes" are needed to get Sony back on track. The Credit Suisse analyst cut its share-price estimate of the company by 59 percent, to 1000 yen. He predicts Sony's net loss for this fiscal year will be 150 billion yen ($1.66 billion).

Deutsche Bank AG also cut its recommendation from "buy" to "hold," as it lowered its share-price estimate by 49 percent, blaming Sony's "high level of operating costs." It appears drastic measures, and further layoffs, will be necessary to restore investors' faith in Sony Corporation.

November NPD shows PSP selling 421k

November's NPD results are rather unsurprising. In spite of a drastic software drought, PSP has managed to carry its weight, selling 421k units -- more than its PS2 and PS3 cousins. While impressive, the figure is dwindled by Nintendo's massive win with both the DS and Wii platforms. Wow. Doesn't everyone in the world have a DS by now?
  • Wii - 2,040,000
  • DS - 1,570,000
  • Xbox 360 - 836,000
  • PSP - 421,000
  • PS3 - 378,000
  • PS2 - 206,000

Check out FF Agito XIII's concept art, world map

There is a bit of new info on Final Fantasy Agito XIII today. It's just a spot, really. In the pages of the yet released Cloud Message magazine, lays this image of the Agito team's drawing board. In it you can spot a world map, some vehicular concept art and a Chocobo. Yep, Chocobos are going to be in this one. There's also an odd collection of symbols pictured in the lower right-hand corner. What could those things be? Perhaps you'd want to take a closer look and find out? To do that, see larger-sized images here.

Analyst predicts double digit percentage decline in sale of PSP/PS3 hardware

November won't be a good month for Sony, if the analysts at EEDAR are to be believed. According to Jesse Divinich, Sony can expect double digit percentage declines from the successful sales of November '07. PSP sales will have plummeted 25% from last year, while PS3 sales will have dropped almost 20%. The softening economy and fierce competition from Microsoft and Nintendo will certainly affect Sony's install base.

At the very least, Sony can take comfort in knowing that PS3 software sales will be up from previous years. However, due to the incredible drought of PSP software, Sony's handheld will be the only platform which will show a decline in software sales.

Really, Sony's promising more PSone games. Really.

How many times have you played CoolBoarders? How 'bout Coolboarders 2? That's pretty much all you'll find on the PlayStation Store if you're looking for a PS1 retro fix. While Japan has an overwhelming of retro titles available for download, the rest of the world has been slow to follow suit. Wouldn't it be nice to download Final Fantasy VII? Or Klonoa? Or Metal Gear Solid? There's so many titles we can think of off the top of our heads.

Well, John Koller is promising the situation will change. Seriously. Really. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," he told MTV Multiplayer.

We'll believe you when we see 'em, Koller.

NPD: 193k PSPs sold during October

PSP sales suffered similarly to the PS3's in October, dropping from September's figure of 238k to 193k. This drop was probably a result of the anemic PSP release schedule. With nothing new or interesting coming out between now and the end of the year, this is likely to continue, though there's the possibility of a potential Christmas-based upturn in November. For the full NPD listing, check after the break.

VGA 08: God of War, Patapon nominated for Best Handheld Game

Spike TV's 2008 Video Game Awards will be kicking off next month and the nominees and categories have all been set in place. Both PSP-exclusive titles God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon have been nominated for Best Handheld Game. Unfortunately, that's all these two have been nominated for. There can only be one winner and it's going to be a tough call between these two -- oh, yes, and the other nominees, of course. The PS3, on the other hand, has a huge amount of nominations -- so check out what's happening on PS3 Fanboy.

Sony to launch Shoot! film shorts this November

SCEE is taking the PSN outside gaming yet again. The last major non-gaming feature content was Movement -- a made-for-PSN TV show documenting various European musicians. SCEE's new focus is Shoot!, which is a series of free downloadable short films from up-and-coming directors. Shoot! sees six Hollywood executive producers (including Jerry Bruckheimer) each chose an upcoming director "from their own country to mentor for the project."

The chosen directors are each tasked to create a short High Def film that "captures the essence of PlayStation: Play, Create, Share, Connect, Discover and Challenge." These films will be available for download off the European PS Store starting November 13, and will be formatted for both PS3 and PSP. The films will also be screened across European film festivals and ShortsTVnetworks starting in January 2009. Check out a full list of directors and deets on their films after the break.

TGS 08: Patapon 2: bigger, badder and more badass

How big is Patapon 2? Well, take the original game ... and then multiply it by two. The upcoming PSP-exclusive sequel will feature a staggering amount of content which makes the original seem rather diminutive. While the first featured 37 levels, Patapon 2 Don Chaka will feature over 80. There were 187 weapons and items in the original -- and over 500 in the new game. Not only that, Patapon 2 will also feature a new multiplayer mode.

While critics and fans have embraced Patapon's unique gameplay, the new content expansion should make the sequel much more appealing to newcomers and veterans alike. The core gameplay remains largely untouched -- each of the face buttons represents a certain sound, and pressing button combinations to the beat will command the Patapon to march, retreat and attack. However, they've added a new twist to the formula. Enter: the Hero Patapon.

Players wanted a more personal interaction with their Patapon. With the Hero Patapon, they'll get just that. The Hero has an expanded set of moves and greater HP, making it far deadlier than the standard Patapon. While Patapon were fairly expendable in the original, players will want the Hero to stay alive. As it can be named by the player, many may think of it as their own unique "pet" in the game.

TGS 08: Full Square Enix Closed Theater impressions

Ah, the Square Enix Mega Theater. It's always something to look forward to at every TGS. We took the time to check out the theater and see what's cooking behind those big, black walls. Square Enix showed off trailers for nine games and a film in the Mega Theater, including two PS3 titles, the Advent Children Complete movie, and four PSP titles. Grab the full scoop on each title in our Square Enix Closed Theater impressions.

TGS 08: LocoRoco 2 and the curiously embargoed trailer

Strangely, only one thing we reported on at Tokyo Game Show this year was under embargo. And that was this LocoRoco 2 trailer. Why? We don't know. If you read our hands-on impressions, you'll know that we're absolutely in love with this rather substantial sequel. Take a watch and see if you can find all the new gameplay features and enemies.

American PC Store update for October 9th

Sony has once again seen fit to update the American PC Store, while the Euro store goes without, yet again. Not a bad update, either. We did name it PSP game of the year 2007, after all. Here's the full release list:
  • Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow full PSP game ($24.99)
  • Guilty Gear: Judgment full PSP game ($5.99)
  • echochrome level pack ($4.99)
