Huh? Hilton Garden Inn made a training game for the PSP

Who says the education sector gets to have all the fun? Last year, Hilton Garden Inn of the Hilton Hotels Corporation developed an internal training game called Ultimate Team Play. The player is placed in various positions at a hotel such as front desk, housekeeping, maintenance or food service. A "unique scoring system" that is also utilized in real Hilton hotels to assess employees is present to keep track of your progress.

This game will obviously not be released commercially, but it has been revealed that a demo will be shown as part of a "30-minute Case Study" at Game Developers Conference 2009.

Exploit that works on the PSP Brite found in GripShift

Famous for its imperviousness to hackers, the PSP Brite has now been hacked by one MaTiAz over at lan.st. An exploit was supposedly found in the 2005 title GripShift and has been described as "a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames [sic]." It is now available for download, as well as an accompanying new SDK. Remember however, this exploit doesn't grant the all-important kernal access. A video of this proof of concept in action, after the jump.

PSP software sales in the UK dropped dramatically during 2008

The UK sales figures for the PSP during 2008 are looking downright abysmal. According to PocketGamer.co.uk, 4.1 million games for Sony's portable were sold during 2008, meaning sales have dropped approximately 27% from 2007's figure of 5.6 million. It looks even worse if you go by revenue -- 70 million pounds in 2008, as opposed to 111 million pounds in 2007, indicating a decline of about 36%.

It is hard to say this comes as a surprise to anyone; there just weren't any high-profile releases during the latter half of the year for the PSP. Hopefully, Sony can get third party publishers interested in the platform again in this new year. Incidentally, there are still a few games we are looking forward to in 2009 -- take a look at our picks here.

Weekly Shonen anniversary ensemble fighter announced

A crossover fighting game featuring characters from rival manga magazines' Weekly Shonen Sunday and Weekly Shonen Magazine has been announced for the PSP. Apparently, this is all part of their 50th anniversary celebrations -- both publications made their simultaneous debuts on the same day back in 1959. No gameplay details have been announced except special moves can be executed with a single button and that the title will be developed by Konami. No release date has been set. A list of IPs that will be make an appearance for the brawler, after the jump.

Dissidia is #1 in Japan, sells nearly half a million copies

Surprising no one, Dissidia was numero uno on last week's Media Create Japanese sales charts, selling an astonishing 489,126 copies. Did it have the best debut week ever for a PSP title in Japan? Of course not, not even close -- that honor belongs to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which managed to push 820,000 copies out the door in its first week, according to PSPHyper. However, it did beat out another Final Fantasy spinoff, Crisis Core, by 3,000 units.

On the hardware side, it was also a healthy week for the PSP: our beloved portable saw 145,957 units in sales, though it was still bested by the DS, which sold 204,144 units. Now the real question is, does Square Enix's fan-service brawler have the momentum it takes to be top dog again next week? Sales numbers and ranking for the top 10 Japanese games of the week are after the jump:

Yep, Disgaea 2 is coming to the PSP

Ah, so the rumors were true. Nippon Ichi has announced that Disgaea 2 will be headed for the PSP on March 26th in Japan. This upcoming portable version of the SRPG will feature a 30% longer story as well as new characters. A screenshot also suggests that the Magichange system found in Disgaea 3 will be added to the port, but this has not been officially announced. No word yet on a stateside release, but we see no reason why there wouldn't be one.

Number of titles supported by adhocParty increased again

The newest update to Sony's Japanese application that allows AdHoc play to now function over the internet via the PS3 is now available. adhocParty 1.04 add many titles to the mix, bringing the number of games supported by the service to over 100. In addition to bringing support to games that have co-op play, even games like Echochrome were included -- meaning you can now trade levels on the web. For details on how to access the service from US, check out the guide here.

For a list of games supported (most likely, only the Japanese versions of each title will be supported), check out the list after the jump (translated by Siliconera):

Dissidia: Final Fantasy officially announced for the US

Square Enix has just officially announced Dissidia: Final Fantasy for North America. Not much new information was provided, other than what we already know -- the story involves Cosmos and Chaos, who are locked in an eternal conflict, the characters will span from different Final Fantasy titles in the past 20 years, the battle system will be action-based and you will have the ability to trade Friend Cards. Unfortunately, no word on the fancy-schmancy limited edition.

The release window is said to be "mid-year 2009," so it is still at least several months away. We can't wait! And while you do that, check out our hands-on with the brawler.

Stylish CLOT x PSP jacket will show everyone your gaming allegiance

Are you a true PSP fanboy? The jacket shown above is probably one of the more stylish ways to express everyone your portable gaming allegiance. In a collaboration with SCEH, Hong Kong-based hip-hop clothing label CLOT has produced a very limited number of these CLOT x PSP M65 military-style jackets for sale -- each of them is priced at $4000 HKD (about $516 USD). Each jacket features the standard CLOT logos, as well as two PlayStation logos and one PSP logo. Here comes the bad news though: even if you had $516 for one of these babies, you won't able to get your hands on one -- a representative at the CLOT told us they are sold out.

Another way to obtain them was to have attended the annual Asia Game Show that took place during November 19th to the 22nd in Hong Kong. By spending $3000 HKD (about $387 USD), you get a chance to enter a random drawing for one of these jackets. More pictures of the jacket can be seen here.

New Harvest Moon title coming March 2009 in Japan

According to Weekly Famitsu, a brand new Harvest Moon title will be making its way onto on the PSP this upcoming March in Japan. In Harvest Moon: Sugar Village, the third PSP title of the farm simulator franchise, you are responsible for the fate of a ... you guessed it, village. Gameplay elements include the ability to make home improvements to your house and to woo girls -- honestly, this sounds just like every other Harvest Moon game. No word yet on whether this game will see a release in the Western market.

Brandish remake headed for the PSP

Falcom is remaking old school action RPG Brandish for the PSP, according to Dengeki Online. The game made its original debut in Japan on the PC, but Americans will be most familiar with the Super Nintendo port released in 1995. The PSP remake is renamed Brandish: The Dark Revenant , and puts you in the shoes of a swordsman named Ares who ends up in a multi-level dungeon with a scantily-clad sorceress chasing after you.

This blogger actually owns the game on the SNES, but didn't finish it due to the awkward controls and steep learning curve -- hopefully this 3D remake will address those issues. The game will be released in Japan on March 19th -- Siliconera reports that Atlus is in talks currently working with Falcom, so we might actually see this in your neck of the woods.

Top 5 selling PSP games of all time

Gamasutra just published a comparison report between software sales on the PSP and the DS in the United States. Not surprisingly, the DS is faring better -- the PSP has released 396 titles with an average of 133,000 units sold per title while the DS has released 653 games with an average of 163,000 copies sold per title. In terms of the average number of games per hardware unit sold, the ratio is 4.8 on the DS and 4.2 on the PSP.

The NPD Group also provided the data on the top 5 selling games on each device. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories takes first place with 2 million copies sold. We suspect the Rockstar sandbox title sold unusually well due to a combination of the popularity of the GTA franchise and a certain little exploit. Lastly, every title on the list are comparatively ancient (the newest game is GTA: Vice City Stories, released back in the end of 06), which doesn't bode well for the PSP. Wanna know what other games made the list? They are available for you right after the jump.

Tenchu 4 confirmed for the PSP

According to this Famitsu scan, Tenchu 4 will be coming to the PSP afterall. Rumors abound last month about a possible port of Tenchu: Shadow Assassins (the official title in the US) proved to be true -- the game will be released in Japan on February 12th of next year for 5,040 yen. Ubisoft's US press release for the game issued back in September indicated the game will be exclusive to the Wii, so no one knows yet whether we'll get the port here in the States.

John Koller: Piracy is 'trending down right now'

John Koller, SCEA's director of hardware marketing, told MTV Multiplayer last week that he sees piracy on the PSP receding in recent months. "It's trending down right now, we've seen the piracy not be as such prevalent in the last month to two months. But it has been a problem for us."

Sony keeps track the various video game piracy discussions around the web, according to Koller "We've noticed there's kind of a 'good vs. evil' battle that we track on many of the forums and many of the pirated web sites," There are even people who stand up for Sony on these websites, notes Koller. "It's kind of been nice to see other consumers going and help and fight the battle for us."

Can you guys think of a reason why piracy would be slowing down in the last two months? Could it be due to the lack of titles that pirates are interested in?
